What is a Canonical URL?

The canonical URL tells search engines the preferred version of a page when similar or duplicate content exists.

Canonicals help against duplicate content from parameters, language variants, or print views. Each glossary URL should self-canonicalize – language alternates belong in hreflang, not as a soft canonical to the other language.
